Hey Guys, Gals & Fruity-Folk!
I’m just about to sit down to dinner & finally RELAX! this weekend was kinda crazy with a house-warming party at my place on Friday (up until 4? what was I thinking??), then the 3 hour drive to see family on Saturday & I just got back tonight… busy, busy, busy. Luckily, my family’s Easter gathering was simple enough that I got away with making a banana/blueberry smoothie & munching on some raw veggies & an apple or two. Also my sister made a vegan quinoa dish that I just had to try! It was delish! Cranberries & walnuts all up in there; yep - it was quite tasty! I love that she’s getting into vegan & vegetarian cooking! Really warms my heart in that fuzzy-family way, you know? :p
I have a lot to catch up on over the next few days with studying & replying to emails & such. Also, over the next two weeks, I’ll be making some changes to the site. Not going to specify exactly what just yet, but I’ll letcha know when it’s all up & running!
Speaking of running, the warm weather has got me thinking about racing again. My dad & I talked about running the Waterloo Classic again this year for Father’s Day & my sister is going to even join in with us! I’m super-stoked!
Hope you guys had a great weekend too! Enjoy the family time & keep spreading the raw love!

What does “body zen” mean?
I’ve been asked this question a couple times and I find it difficult to answer because, to be honest, I think it’s a little different for everyone. But I will try and explain what it means to me.
When I created this blog in January 2011, those two words were just the first ones that happened to pop into my head when I thought about my goals for my weight loss journey. I was overweight and feeling uncomfortable in my own skin. I wanted to be flexible, strong and confident - three things I hadn’t felt in a very long time. So I chose two words that embodied that feeling to me and called the blog “body zen”.
It’s that feeling of strength and inspiration you get from moving and loving your body. I have no solid way to describe it. If you play sports, or run races, it’s that feeling of accomplishment when you break a personal best. If you practice yoga, it’s the moment of clarity in your posture when you find your breathe and expand fully. When you dance it’s that full freedom of expression with your body. Does that make sense?
I still don’t always feel that way in my body. I have good days and bad days, as most of us do. I’m not sure that I’d still be blogging if all my days were perfect. :p But basically that’s what body zen is; that strive to be the best version of yourself physically and mentally.
My Zen is:
Lots of fruits and veggies
Daily yoga practice
Messy hair
Water guzzling
Daily walk/run with pup
Herbal teas
Natural lotions, makeup, shampoo etc.
Playtime with loved ones
Bubble baths

If this makes sense to you, let me know what you think. What’s your zen? What contributes to you feeling like the best version of you?

I think I need to start working out in the mornings more. Cardio, at least. I remember this time last year, when I had just completed my first 5k race, I would wake up at six am to start every day with a twenty or thirty minute jog. It was always light and easy. It was fresh, and always a different horizon as the sun peaked over the trees. I miss that. The hardest part was definitely taking those first few steps out the door (especially in the winter) but the experience was never something I regretted once I was done. So I’m picking that back up again, along with a lil stretching and yoga afterwards.
I think this means I’m becoming a morning person again. I may need to buy some more tea… :-\
This was me today after my run today, you can’t tell but I’m pretty stinky. :p
Also I bought myself an ipod recently, and I’m just getting some songs on it and playlists together, right now I’m digging the workout songs on Songza, but if you’ve got any suggestions for morning running toons I’d love to have ‘em! :D
For the morning runners out there, what’s your morning routine like? Any tips for motivating yourself to not hit snooze?

I want to log 100 kilometers this week.

Sounds scarier than it is, I hope. I have been a little sloppy with getting enough cardio in over the summer - okay, I admit it - very sloppy. So, as we say goodbye to the lazy days of August, I want to challenge myself to a weekly kilometer race! I chose the number 100 quite randomly, but I figure I’ll do most of it on the bike and a few kms here and there walking and running with the dog. Just can’t let myself get behind a day.
I’m sure I’ll end up doing more yoga this week as well to stretch out my out-of-shape muscles. This week is going to be just what I need! I haven’t given myself a push like this is too long, so I’m hoping I not only reach my goal, but get a few extra kilometers in there for good measure!
Today I logged 15 kilometers. Not a bad start, but I’m definitely going to aim higher tomorrow! The poor pup was soo exhausted from his adventuring at the lake this weekend that he slept all day long and didn’t even want to go for a walk! Tomorrow he should be back to his usual self and help me knock off 4 or 5 kms too! Good night all! Think healthy thoughts! ;)

Winter Running

So I woke up this morning without any alarm (just a cold, wet nose in my face) and decided to head out for an early run. It was a cool -10 ºC, or, 14 ºFfor my American friends, and it took me a while to warm up. But once I got a nice rhythm going it was beautiful! I actually enjoy running in the cold, you never really overheat and I hate that feeling! The only thing I am not fond of when it comes to running in the winter is the ice. I didn’t fall this morning thank goodness, but there were a few close calls. I think it’s just a matter of time before my butt is bruised.

Happy Saturday Everybody! Hope you all have a healthy and happy day! :)

November Goals

I haven’t been setting goals for the past few months, so I figured I should just jump right back in and set a few for November.

- lose 3lbs. I know it’s not much, but I am so close to my GW that its getting very difficult to shed the fat. I think 3 is a good number to aim for at this point.

- workout a minimun of 5 times a week. This could be a gym workout, a long run, yoga etc. As long as it’s something!

- maintain healthy eating habits. I’ve been cheating a lot lately, mostly with cheese and crackers, nachos and breads. I just need to stay focused and even when I am stressed out studying all night long I need to reach for carrotts instead of crackers.

- start training for the 10km race. With two 5k’s under my belt I think it’s about time I pushed myself a little further. I plan on racing an 8km in February and a 10k shortly after. One long run a week.

- explore the gym. I have been sticking to the treadmill and stationary bike for my cardio, and dumbbells and barbells for strength, I kinda want to test out some of the machines and see if I can in corporate some into my routine.

- drink more water. I seriously underhydrate some days and I know it isn’t doing anything to help my weightloss. 8 glasses minimum. Even if it means going to the bathroom during a lecture! lol

There. I don’t think that’s too terribly difficult for November. I am excited to kick it up a notch and really test my limits. Wishing you all a happy, healthy new month as well! :)
